KELLY WEARSTLER DEBUTS FIRST TABLEWARE COLLECTION, IN COLLABORATION WITH SERAX

In her first ever tableware collection, Kelly Wearstler explores abstract motifs and unexpected implementations of materials across two families: Zuma and Dune. Comprising a conversation between past and present, Zuma alludes to modern and historic technology, while Dune marries the materiality and forms of the natural world.

Rich, patterns and unexpected colour pairings are signatures to the Kelly Wearstler design vernacular. In keeping with her studio’s current explorations, Wearstler engages futuristic vector grids within the Zuma family. For the porcelain tableware, Wearstler stripped down a digital graphic pattern to convey a hand painted feel, creating a balance between technology and craft.

The patterns vary throughout the range and are intended to be mixed and matched across colours and shapes. To complement the contemporary references of the porcelain, Wearstler developed stemware that draws upon amber tones found in ancient glass from across the globe. Taking a rectilinear shape, the colour application juxtaposes the unusually thick and straight nature of its form - creating an unexpected harmony with the graphic patterned dishes.

The Dune family’s two-tone finishes of matte and high gloss ceramics enhance the sculptural crests and ridges that variegate the dishes and platters. Taking an unexpected turn, the corrugated motif is repeated across glassware and flatware in differing forms to yield diverse yet holistic place settings. As is crucial to Wearstler’s broader practice, mixed materiality is central. To further elevate the dining experience, she has developed marble serveware to anchor the tablescape with shapes evocative of those that are evident in the ceramics. References to the natural world permeate the collection with Wearstler incorporating relaxed, organic wood serving pieces within the Dune range, rounding out the elemental family of ceramic, stone, glass and metal tableware.
